2001 Motorcycle Design Awards |
The Winner in the Supersport category is the Yamaha R1. The new Yamaha R1 was elected number one in the Supersport category. This was the most difficult task: the R1 is a young concept and still this second version is entirely new. But it keeps a special feeling which allows it to be identified at the first glance. One feels that the Yamaha designers had in mind the design of the Porsche 911, introduced in 1964, which has been much modified since but has kept its personality through the years. Winner in the Motorcycle Open category is the Harley-Davidson V-Rod. Here also the target for the designers was to draw a brand new bike that anyone could recognise as a Harley-Davidson. This machine uses new shapes, new materials and technical concepts from nose to tail, but keeps alive the famous name's image. The Scooter Trophy went to the Gilera 50 Ice. This machine shows a completely new approach for a scooter in its shape - it brings a breath of fresh air into this category, but still remains an attractive product. When collecting their Trophies, all representatives of the winning manufacturers expressed how these awards put the spotlight on men and teams usually working in the shadows, but so important to ensure a commercial success for any new product.
