2002 Motorcycle Design Awards

A New Category for 2002

This year, the MDA has revised the award system, so that we now have four separate categories, and one overall winner for the Design Trophy. The addition of the "Concept Bike" category to the three previous groups means we can now recognise show-bikes and design studies which may never reach production. These bikes nevertheless reflect the most advanced styling exposed to the public.

Presentation of the awards took place at the International Motor Cycle & Scooter Show at the Birmingham NEC on press day, 14 November. Winners of the four main categories were presented with framed certificates, and the overall winner received the famous 2002 Motorcycle Design Trophy - a hand-polished aluminium trophy mounted on a black granite base. The trophies are produced in limited numbers by Macon-based sculptor André Bouilloux to a design by Glynn Kerr.

The Winners

The MDA is pleased to announce that the overall winner of the 2002 Motorcycle Design Trophy is the Ducati 749/999.

This design has retained the individuality for which Ducati sports bikes have become famous, without taking obvious styling cues from its predecessor. Replacing the 916, which had become a design legend, was an awesome task, but Pierre Terblanche and his team have risen to the challenge. They have produced an advanced and striking design, while also making vast improvements to rider ergonomics and drastically reducing the number of components. The 999 also wins the 2002 award for the "Supersport" category.

In the other fields, Kawasaki wins the motorcycle "Open Category" for the Z1000, with which Kawasaki fights back with a strikingly fresh approach to the naked streetfighter look. Peugeot wins the "Scooter & Commuter" award for their daring supercharged Jetforce scooter, and KTM takes the "Concept Bike" award for the 950 Duke prototype, as seen at the Munich Intermot in September.
